Why no colors?

Colorful soaps are all the rage in handmade soaps. They should be! They are beautiful creations showing the beautiful creativity of people.

So.... Why don't I color my soaps?

Well, you see, for me, making soaps isn't about aesthetics.

I do try to make them as pretty and presentable as I can.

However, what matters most to me and my family isn't how the soap looks, but rather how it performs and what is in it.

One day, I may eventually add colorants to my soap. But... when I do, it'll have to be something like alfalfa or paprika or turmeric or some other herb or spice that is beneficial in some way to the health of our skin.

I refuse to use dyes. I'm pretty sure we've all seen the negative information about dyes and how they cause a whole slew of issues.

I also refuse to use Mica. Why? It's so popular! Yes, it is. And I looked into putting mica in my soap. The kicker is, when I went to research what mica is made out of, what I found was frustrating. The dreaded word ....... Aluminum.

Yep, Aluminum! Mica is made out of various ingredients. It's NOT always aluminum. It's often made out of a whole slew of substances other than aluminum. But, the catch is, on all the websites I looked at that sold mica, I couldn't verify what their mica was made out of. So, for the safety of my family and yours, I made the call to skip it... just in case.

However, if you are aware of a high quality mica that is absolutely NOT made out of aluminum or anything else that can be harmful, I'll definitely consider coloring my soaps with it.

Until then, my soap may be a boring cream color, but at least we can all feel good about what is, and is NOT, in it!
